Modern Math - Intro to Geometry IIDescription:
Modern Math Intro to Geometry II
This course continues from the Fall quarter (at a slower pace than the Monday class as it is geared to younger students). A student can join, if she/he is familiar with the following:
a. definitions of a point, line, straight line, angle, and circumference;
b. measuring angles with a protractor;
c. notions of a straight angle, right angle, and opposite angles;
d. the fact that angles of any triangle in the Euclidean plane add up to a straight angle. Familiarity means understanding the proof of the fact.
e. how to use a compass and ruler to draw a triangle with given side lengths; and finally,
f. how to use a compass and ruler to draw an angle equal to the given one;
A diagnostic quiz will be given to the newcomers on the first day of the class. If a student fails it, she/he will be offered placement in a different class that better meets her/his needs. Please understand that math is a field where to have a positive learning experience, a student often needs to have some prior knowledge of the subject. This is a group class,
so I would not be able to cater to the needs of the students who are far behind the body of the class.
Contents of the course.
1. Polygons in the Euclidean plane. In this part, we shall study geometric properties of parallelograms, rectangles, rhombuses, and squares.
2. What is the shortest path from Home to School in your world? In this part, we shall learn how to construct the shortest paths connecting two different points in the Euclidean plane, on a cylinder, and on a sphere.
3. Circumferences in flat and warped worlds. The mystery of pi. In this part, we shall compare properties of a circumference in the Euclidean plane, on a cylinder and sphere.
4. Triangles in warped worlds. In this part, we shall learn what triangles are on a cylinder and sphere and study their properties.
5. What is so special about the plane? In this part, we shall take a good look at the parallel postulate and see why it doesn't hold for the cylinder and sphere.
6. Coordinates, or how to locate yourself on the plane, cylinder, and on the globe.
Each topic will take two to four classes depending on the students' progress. Please bring a few sheets of paper, pencils, a compass, and a ruler to every class. We shall draw a lot using these tools. A transparent sticky tape and scissors will also be needed for studying cylinders.
