MATH - GENERAL

Title:

A Modern Look At Elementary Arithmetic

Description:

Requirements: the child must be fluid at adding and subtracting single-digit numbers. The child must have an abacus with ten beads on a wire.

Contents of the course.
1. Parts of a number. It is a typical kindergarten and elementary school problem to break a (positive integral) number into a sum of two. In this part, we shall learn how to break a (positive integral) number n into any number of parts, from one, n = n, to n, n = 1 + 1 + ... + 1.

2. The abacus, or why our system of counting is called place-valued. In this part, we shall learn to add and subtract numbers using the computer of the ancient world, the abacus. In the process, we shall also learn foundations of the decimal place-value numerical system currently used by humanity.

3. Multiplication through gardening. In this part, we shall learn that multiplication is nothing else but figuring out the area of a rectangular garden. In particular, this approach explains why a*b = b*a for any multiples a and b.

4. How did the ancients do it? Egyptian multiplication or the powers of two. In this part, we shall learn the fist way to multiply numbers invented by the human kind. In the process, we shall start implicitly learning powers and the binary numerical system.

5. Place-value systems, binary versus decimal. In this part, we shall learn how to go back and forth between a binary and decimal representation of a number.

Each topic will take two to four classes depending on the students' progress.
